PODCASTS: To get you hooked

I few posts ago I shared with you my love for podcdasts and mentioned a few I listen to when I need a little “pick me up”, podcasts that get me feeling good and inspire me to become a better person.

This time I want to share with you some other favorite podcasts. They’re completely different to my other list, these will leave you in suspense and shocked over how the stories unfold.

If you’re still not into the podcast world and haven’t really found any that motivates you to begin, maybe these will do the trick. All of these will keep you wanting more. They are the perfect listen on a long commute, a road trip or the plane.

Serial Season 1 – This is the one that started it all for me, back in 2014 I could not get enough of this one, I was totally hooked. The first season of Serial is narrated by Sarah Koenig, she takes you along on her journey to investigate the disappearance of Hae Min Lee, a high schooler in Baltimore. After her murder in 1999, police found Adnan Sayed guilty, but many were not convinced. A family member reached out to Sarah hoping to find answers and appeal Adnan’s case. The narration and perfect editing of this podcast will take you on a journey where you too will surely find yourself flipping sides. Is he guilty? Is he not? Sarah reveals information as she discovers it herself and talks with many of the involved, including Adnan. If you enjoy any movie or series that keeps you on your toes with the mystery and suspense, you’ll love Serial.

Missing Richard Simmons – Remember that whole aerobics craze back in the 80’s? The Richard Simmons “Sweating to the Oldies” tapes? Well, after 30 years of being in the public eye Richard Simmons has gone missing. Back in February 2014 he decided to stop showing up (he still taught aerobics at his studio) and it left people wondering why. Journalist Dan Trabeski decides to look into this case to try and find Richard Simmons, find out where he’s been and why he decided to disappear, or even find out if he’s still alive. This podcast will make you ask yourself questions about the expectations we have of other people, the responsibilities (if there are any) that come from being a public person. Do we expect too much?

Dirty John – Maybe you’ve already seen the TV series. If so, that’s great because this is one of the most incredible stories I have heard. I didn’t watch the series but I listened to the podcast back when it came out and loved it. This is a true story of a woman that falls in love with a man and slowly, but surely, we all begin to discover things about their relationship that keeps us on the edge. We begin to feel stress and want to fix the situation before it gets out of hand. I don’t want to say too much, all I want to say is: you can listen to the podcast or you can watch the series, whatever you choose is fine by me. Just know this story.

Dr. Death – This podcast tells the story about a real neurosurgeon in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Duntsch. He promised to be the best in his field but couldn’t have been more wrong. Listening to this podcast will let you in on the dark side of medicine and the dangers there can be because of how the whole industry operates. It will keep you asking “how could this happen?”. This story is so hard to believe, but sadly all of it is true. Dr. Duntsch did so many people such wrong it is unbelievable that he went on for so long. Note: This is not for the faint of heart. It details medical procedures and interviews real patients who have been wronged by Dr. Duntsch.

Although I would love to include other podcasts in this list, I decided to stick to the ones that that impacted me the most. These are the ones I could surely relisten to like you would rewatch any of your favorite series or movies.

I hope you find at least one of these interesting. If so, I would love to know which one. And, as always, I would love to hear about any of your recommendations, have you listened to any podcast that left you wanting more? Let me know! I’m always looking for new ones to binge on.
